Beats in Bites: New Series

June, 2011

Genuine Pictures Inc. of Ottawa is pleased to announce that it is now in pre-production on the company’s newest series, Beats in Bites. The children’s series is set for broadcast on TVOntario in early 2012.

Beats in Bites is a live action/CG animation series that celebrates the art of beatboxing. It stars Canadian beatbox artists Julia Dales and Ammar Abou-Agena and four young future beatbox talents. In each episode, Julia and Ammar teach the children how to produce sounds using the mouth, lips, tongue and voice. They also mesmerize their young protégés in a music video style performance with a lexicon of sounds ranging from drum sets to tongue clicks, gogo to echo vocals. The kids join in the fun, dancing and beatboxing alongside the experts. Beats in Bites also features two real-life parrots, Sunny & Pepper, who mimic the sounds of the performers.

Creator Donna Leon says “Beats takes us off the road and into a green-screen studio. We traditionally shoot on location, so this is an exciting change for us. We are looking forward to bringing the art of beatboxing to young Canadian audiences and youth around the world.”

The 32 x 7 minute series goes into production at Ottawa’s Fuel Studios in August. Beats in Bites was developed and is produced in association with TVOntario. It is also supported by the Canada Media Fund and the Shaw Rocket Fund. International distribution is being handled by CCI Entertainment of Toronto. Visual Education Centre/Learn 360 will distribute the series educationally.
